Dickey played nine years in Green Bay

Lynn Dickey remembers when he signed his first NFL contract.

It was for $20,000.

The Packers Hall of Famer was in La Crosse on Wednesday night speaking at the Gateway Boy Scouts dinner.

When the 66-year-old hears news like Brock Osweiler signing with the Houston Texans for $72 million, he can’t hardly fathom it and said pro players today don’t seem to work their way up the pay scale like he did.

“It’d be like if you’re just a normal student coming out of college and General Motors Company started you as the president,” Dickey said.

Osweiler, if you recall, is the former Broncos backup quarterback with 21 games and 305 career passes under his belt.

Dickey, who played 13 years – his final nine in Green Bay – remembers that $20,000 contract and laughing about it, knowing he’d have played for nothing.

And the memories he has of those nine seasons in Green Bay are still ones he brags about today.

“To tell people, I’m 66 years old and I still remember that, to run out of that tunnel,” Dickey said. “Not many people in the world get to do that. It’s really cool.”

Two years ago, Bart Starr was the guest speaker at the Gateway dinner.
