Hilltoppers in tourney for
second time in three years

ONALASKA, Wis. – Here’s Tyler Ebner’s third-period goal that eventually sent the Onalaska High School boys hockey team to state.

The top-seeded Hilltoppers defeated Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at the OmniCenter to advance to the state tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. 

At 5 p.m. Thursday at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, the Hilltoppers (24-3) will open with Hudson (23-4) quarterfinals.

Onalaska didn’t take long to get a lead on Rapids/Lincoln (18-9). Midway through the first Jacob Dirks put them on the board, assisted by Tyler Ebner. Minutes later, Sam Dabrowski followed a Jamal Wagner shot for a goal and 2-0 lead. 

Onalaska never did relinquish the lead, though Rapids/Lincoln pulled within 2-1 midway through the second quarter, before Ebner’s decisive goal.
