Expert says daily
fantasy is gambling

A bill to create oversight for big money payout sites like FanDuel and Draft Kings is circulating in Madison.

The proposal specifies that using the fantasy sites is not betting, and that’s the big question. Is it?

“Gambling is where you’re placing a monetary bet and taking a risk,” Rose Gruber, executive director of the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling, said. “So, techinically, we consider it to be some form of gambling.”

Gruber says her organization has increasingly fielded calls from those who start betting money through online fantasy sports sites and can’t stop.

But it’s not a problem for everyone.

“For the most part, most people can do any king of gambling socially and it’s not going to be an issue,” Gruber said.

Under current state law, only tribes and state government are allowed to be involved in any kind of gambling activity.
