Teams play Saturday in Section 1 championships

Eleven days after the Caledonia High School football team destroyed Chatfield by 35 points in the regular-season finale, the two teams were back on the field again Tuesday in the playoffs.

This time, it was a 48-0 shutout for No. 1-ranked Caledonia, now 10-0 and a game from the Section 1, Class 2A state playoffs.

At 8 p.m. Saturday, Caledonia, which was up 21-0 after the first and 41-0 at halftime, will play fifth-ranked Lewiston-Altura at Rochester Community and Technical College.

The Cardinals, also 10-0, defeated Triton 42-21.

In Class 4A, ninth-ranked Winona took down Red Wing for the second time this season, winning 41-34. At 7 p.m. Saturday, the No. 2-seeded Winhawks (8-1) will play at top-seeded and second-ranked Stewartville (9-0).

In Class 9-man, fourth-ranked Spring Grove had zero problems with Mabel-Canton, winning 48-14. The Lions now rematch with top-ranked Grand Meadow (10-0) – a team they lost to 21-20 on Oct. 9. The teams will face off at 5 p.m. Saturday at RCTC.

Grand Meadow ended Houston’s season with a 33-8 victory in the semifinals.

In Class 1A, Rushford-Peterson fell to Goodhue 21-20. On Oct. 8, the score was just about the opposite, as the Trojans won in the regular season, 24-21. Also in Class 1A, Wabasha-Kellogg fell to Fillmore Central 35-0.
