Hilltoppers qualify despite sub-.500 conference record
The seeds are out for the WIAA football playoffs (below) and the biggest surprise comes in the Division 3 pairings where Onalaska High School has qualified for the playoffs.
Teams with an above-.500 record get automatics bids to the playoffs in Wisconsin. Teams with a .500 record must be voted in. Onalaska finished the season 3-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference after a 42-34 loss Friday.
Despite that, the Hilltoppers are in. Perhaps it was the 34-point second half, after trailing the Rangers 35-0 at halftime.
West Salem also needed a win Friday for a playoff berth and got just that with a 35-0 victory over Central.
Westby, too, needed a win for the playoffs and did so in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion.
With 39 seconds Shane Gran found Jesse Solberg for a 27-yard touchdown, giving Westby a one-point lead and eventually a 30-27 win over Black River Falls.
