Mississippi Valley Conference play got underway last night and continues tonight.

Because the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team is hosting Luther College tonight on AM 580 WKTY, beginning at 6:40 p.m., high school football will be on AM 1410 WIZM. 

There, and video streaming here, will be the MVC matchup of Central (1-1) at Onalaska (1-1). For those Caledonia fans, you can tune in to FM 94.7 to listen to that home matchup with Pine Island or listen online here.

Unlike Minnesota, conference play in Wisconsin football is vastly important, as you need an above-.500 record in conference to qualify for the playoffs. Holmen High School’s football team got off to a great start Thursday night with a 46-14 rout of Aquinas at UW-La Crosse.

It was 33-0 late in the half before the Blugolds (2-1) finally got on the board. With 58 seconds to go before the break, Conley Malone caught a 34-yard touchdown from Tyler Young.

It ended up being all for nothing, however, as Holmen’s Kyle Koebl returned the ensuing kick 44 yards and the Vikings scored on a Connor Duncan 5-yard run four plays later, leaving just 4 seconds remaining in the first half.

Duncan, the quarterback, had 22 carries for 191 yards and a pair of rushing scores. He also added one 61-yard completion. Seth Holden had 75 yards on 13 carries. He and Koebl each scored two touchdowns as well.

Holmen outgained Aquinas 465-295. The Blugolds were led by Young’s 263 yard’s passing, going 33-for-34 with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
