Packers could also reach out to James Jones

Jordy Nelson will undergo an MRI this morning to confirm what the Green Bay Packers are assuming is a torn ACL.

If that is confirmed, which will end Nelson’s season before it begins, the Packers will reach out to 36-year-old Reggie Wayne, according to Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN.

If Wayne doesn’t pan out, the Packers are rumored to also be interested in James Jones, who is trying to make the New York Giants’ 53-man roster. Jones played for Green Bay his first seven season, before leaving for Oakland on a three-year contract last season. He was cut in May by the Raiders.

Wayne, who visited New England on Sunday and took a physical, is heading into his 15th season, but hasn’t been much of a factor since his 2012 campaign (106 receptions, 1,355 yards, 5 TDs). Last season, Wayne had 64 catches for 779 yards – tied for a career low 12.2 average – and 2 TDs for the Colts in 15 games last year. He played in just seven games in 2013 (38 catches, 503 yards, 2 TDs).

Wayne may have lost a step, but he could fit right in with the Packers, either as a third receiver behind Randall Cobb and Davante Adams, or the possession receiver, complimenting Green Bay’s downfield threats.
