Baker’s 37-yarder opens season on high note

With 3.4 seconds left in the game, Logan High School’s Nathan Baker kicked a 37-yard field goal for the win.

Baker’s kick gave the Rangers a 17-14 victory at home over Eau Claire Memorial in the season opener.

Logan’s Tanner Holzer gave the team a 7-0 lead in the first with a 4-yard score and Manny Buckanan’s 10-yard TD put them up again, 14-7, midway through the second quarter.

Memorial tied it in the third, before Baker’s kick. Buckanan finished with 25 carries for 136 yards, while Trey Davis threw for 135 yards going 9 of 14 for the Rangers.

CHIPPEWA FALLS 28, HOLMEN 7

HOLMEN, Wis. – The Vikings only score came with 7.4 seconds remaining in the game.

Chippewa Falls outgained Holmen 352 to 224 on the ground. The teams combined for just 17 yards passing – all by Holmen on two completions. 

ONALASKA 35, NEKOOSA 19

ONALASKA, Wis. – Nekoosa led 7-0 after the first, before the Hilltoppers scored 21 unanswered to run away with it.

Jalen Zubich had 142 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries for Onalaska, which scored touchdowns on a blocked punt and a 75-yard interception return by Tarek Tuttle.

ST. CROIX CENTRAL 33, WEST SALEM 10

WEST SALEM, Wis. – The Panters Mark Harris scored on a 67-yard pass from Tim Schauf in the first quarter to take a 7-6 lead. Ryan Beirne’s 37-yard field goal midway through the second put them up 10-7.

St. Croix, however, scored the rest and finished with 348 total yards to West Salem’s 267.
