OF is signed through next season; Brewers also looking to trade Segura

It looks as though the Milwaukee Brewers are ready to abandon ship on, not just this season, but the near-future, as well.

Today, it sounds as though Carlos Gomez is on the market, according to CBSsports.com

The MLB trade deadline is July 31.

The 29-year-old outfield, Gomez, is to become a free agent in 2017. He’s currently on the second year of his bargain, three-year, $24-million deal. But, his agent is Scott Boras, who is known for getting his players paid. When Gomez hits the market, he’s expected to make more money than the Brewers will be able to pay him.

Gomez is hitting .273 with 8 home runs, 42 RBI. He’s stolen just seven bases this season and been caught five times.

Earlier this month, the Brewers were rumored to have put 25-year-old shortstop Jean Segura on the trading block, as well. Segura, however, is under contract. His rookie deal runs through 2018, but he hasn’t produced like he did in his first full season in Milwaukee.

That season (2013), Segura hit .294 with 44 stolen bases and 12 home runs. This season is better than last, hitting .273 with three home runs and 12 stolen bases. In 2014, Segura hit just .246 with 20 stolen bases and five home runs.

These notable Brewers will become free agents after this season: Aramis Ramirez, 37, who has said he will retire, Kyle Lohse, 36, and Gerardo Parra, 28.
