LA CROSSE, Wis. – The WIAA State Track and Field Meet takes place Friday and Saturday and Holmen High School’s athletes will be busy.
The Vikings have athletes participating in 12 different events in the Division 1 portion of state, which begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday at UW-La Crosse’s Veterans Memorial Field. The Division 2 and 3 meet begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, the finals for all divisions begins at 9:30 a.m. for field events and 10:30 a.m. on the track.
Holmen’s Danielle Kohlwey has the best qualifying time in the field in the 100 hurdles (14.38 seconds). The next best qualifying time is 15.03. It’s one of three events for the senior, who will also compete in the 300-meter hurdles and long jump.
At state last year, Kohlwey placed second in the 300 hurdles (44.33) and third in the 100 hurdles (14.37).
Freshman teammate Mason Kalander posts some of the best qualifying times in the field heading into the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. She’s fifth-fastest in the 3,200 (11 minutes, 8.93 seconds), though the top time is significantly faster (10:47.02), and third fastest in the 1,600 (5:04.08).
Making their second consecutive appearances at state are Holmen junior Amanda Wiebke (triple jump) and Logan senior Tore Washa (200), where she placed seventh last year.
Holmen’s Dylan Cooper has qualified in three events (high jump, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles). It’s the second year in a row in the high jump for the senior. Teammate Brandon Christnovich will run the 200 and take part in two relays (400, 1,600).
The 400 relay took fifth at state last year. Junior Aaron Zmolek is the only holdover from that team. Holmen’s 1,600 relay is also making a second consecutive appearance. Christnovich and Zmolek both return from that team.
