Vikings sign Caledonia’s Fruechte
Now joins Tennessee’s Klug in NFL
Isaac Fruechte is officially a Minnesota Viking. The team that announcement today, signing the Caledonia, Minn., native to the 80-man roster.
The 6-foot-3, 202-pound wide receiver out of the University of Minnesota, was invited to rookie minicamp over the weekend after the NFL draft and, obviously impressed.
The Vikings were one of a few teams, including the Packers, to have interest in Fruechte and they didn’t let him go.
He now joins Caledonia High School alum, Karl Klug in the NFL. Klug is a 2006 graduate who went to Iowa and is in his sixth season with Tennessee.
Fruechte was named the Gophers wide receiver of the year his senior season, but only had 18 catches for 292 yards (16.2 avg) and a touchdown.
But Fruechte’s college career was a rollercoaster – in getting to Minnesota and playing for the Gophers. In his three seasons as a Gopher, he caught passes from four different quarterbacks (MarQueis Gray, Max Shortell, Philip Nelson and Mitch Leidner).
Out of high school, where he helped Caledonia win state titles in 2007 and 2008, he wanted to walk on at Minnesota and earn a scholarship. His grades, however, weren’t good enough, and he elected to go to Rochester Community Technical College and get his grades up.
At RCTC, he impressed with 29 catches for 788 yards (27.2 avg.) and eight touchdowns. He also ran a 4.4-second 40. And, he got his grades up. Minnesota gave him a full ride.
Now, he’s impressed again with the Vikings.
Minnesota currently has 11 wide receivers on the roster led by 24-year-old Cordarrelle Patterson, Charles Johnson (26) and newcomer Mike Wallace (28) from the Miami Dolphins. Minnesota also drafted Maryland’s Stefon Diggs in the fifth round of the NFL draft.
