That’s Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg dancing his way to the Sweet 16, and nobody can tell him any different … not even his children Jack and Paige, as can be seen on Twitter.
But it’s hard to contain one’s self after winning in such dramatic fashion.
DeAndre Kane nailed a layup with 2 seconds remaining to give three-seed Iowa State the 85-83 win over No. 6 North Carolina Sunday – punching its ticket to New York, New York for the Sweet 16.
At 6:27 p.m. Friday, the Cyclones will face seventh-seeded Connecticut (28-8) at Madison Square Garden for a shot at the Elite 8. After that, it’ll be either No. 1 Virginia (30-6) or No. 4 Michigan State (28-8) for the Final Four.
We all know Hoiberg – an Ames, Iowa, native, who won state for Ames High School in 1991 and was named Mr. Basketball for Iowa that season – can shoot. He has 183 3-pointers in four years at Iowa State and another 373 in 10 seasons in the NBA proved that.
We know “The Mayor” – the nickname he was given after receiving several write-in votes during the 1993 Ames mayoral race – can coach, as he’s led the Cyclones (28-7) to their third 20-win season in a row in his four seasons.
Now, he just needs to work on his dancing, but, in its current state, it’s not going to get him fired. Hoiberg is in the midst of a 10-year contract with Iowa State – which expires in 2023 – worth $20 million.
He may be gone from his hometown before that, however. He’s beginning to receive NBA interest and NBA analyst for TNT, Steve Kerr, said when he’s ready, the NBA wants him.
“I’ve talked to a lot of people in the NBA,” said Kerr, a former guard for the NBA champion Bulls and Spurs, along with a general manager for the Suns, who was calling the NCAA games last weekend for TNT. “The minute he says he’s interested, he’ll have some offers.”
According to Randy Peterson with the Des Moines Register, he’s already receiving interest.
Hoiberg has acknowledged that he had head coaching inquiries from NBA franchises that he would not identify. He said he hasn’t let it extend beyond the inquiry stage.
“Nothing got to the point where there was an offer,” Hoiberg, 41, said when his contract was re-worked last summer.
But for now, Hoiberg will just hope to keep on dancing. Let’s just hope it’s more in the figurative sense, than literal.
