Central Sawyer Smith finished up his high school career with a pair of third-place finishes at the WIAA Division 1 track and field meet.

Smith, who is headed to the University of Wisconsin on a half-scholarship to become a decathlete, finished third in both the long jump and 400-meter dash.

Smith was 2¾ inches behind first place in the long jump on Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium with a leap of 23-feet. Sophomore teammate Aric Elmore ended up right behind him in fourth (22-10¾).

Smith finished the 400 in 48.54 seconds. Grafton junior Erick Huertas won in 47.76.

Also finishing up his state career was Tomah’s Byron Neal. The senior finished fourth in both the 100 (10.92) and 200 (21.95). Jester Weah of Madison Memorial won both races in 10.8 and 21.73, respectively.

Neal medaled as a freshman as part of the 800-meter relay team that took sixth and won state titles in the 100 and 200 in leading Aquinas to a state championship as a sophomore. Transferring schools kept him from competing as a junior.

Senior teammate Kyle Whaley finished fifth in the shot put (56-feet, 7-inches). Winning the event was Waukesha West senior Dylan Chmura (59-9¾).
