Logan’s Elmore finishes 2nd in LJ, Holmen’s Kohlwey top seed in hurdles

One field event down, one to go in Aric Elmore’s final trip to the WIAA state track and field meet at UW-La Crosse.

The Logan High School senior finished second in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, 10.75 inches, while senior teammate Jarrod Besl finished just out of the medals in seventh (22-4.25).

Bay Port Zachary Lorbeck won the event (23-3). The senior also won the high jump and has the second-best time in the 100 hurdles.

Elmore, who finished fourth in the long jump the last two seasons, will take part in today’s triple jump finals, which begin at 9:30 a.m. today. He took ninth at state in the event last season.

Holmen senior Dylan Cooper finished fifth in the high jump (6-foot-4), while freshman teammate Mason Kalander also finished fifth in the girls 1,600-meter run (5:00.78) – right where she was seeded. She will compete in today’s 3,200 final, where she’s seeded third.

Others from the area finishing just short of a medal were Onalaska Amanda Wiebke and Logan’s Kaitlyn Ganrude. The junior, Wiebke set a school record in finishing seventh – one spot out of medalling – in the girls triple jump (37-1). Ganrude took ninth in the pole vault (10-6) and 12th in the triple jump (36-4).

Moving on after Friday’s preliminaries will be a slew of athletes from the area, including Holmen’s Danielle Kohlwey. The senior finished right where expected, seeded first in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles with respective times of 14.23 and 44.3 seconds.

Logan senior Tore Washa is seeded fifth heading into today’s 200 finals, after a 24.74 finish Friday. She’ll also run on the 800 relay, which heads into today’s final seeded fifth after finishing 1:42.93.

Holmen’s boys will send two relays to the finals (the 400 and 1,600). Both of those teams are seeded 10th (43.13 and 3:22.91, respectively).
