Proposal to allow chiropractors to perform sports physicals

Some medical groups are objecting the bill

Sports physicals might not require a trip to a doctor’s office anymore soon in Wisconsin.

At least not a medical doctor.

Despite objections from some medical groups, lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow chiropractors to conduct sports physicals.

Muskego republican Chuck Wichgers is one of the key sponsors of the proposal and defended it during a hearing on Wednesday in Madison.

“This offers options,” Wichgers said. “This isn’t putting anybody at risk. They’re doctors. They’re qualified. And they would have to get the additional training.”

Wichgers thinks it just might be the better way to go.

“In some cases, they’re going to do a better job because they know the patient more thoroughly than the walk-in clinic,” he said. “These doctors are hands on. They’re involved. Throughout the state of Wisconsin, throughout the United States, more and more patients are saying, ‘That’s my doctor.'”

The bill would also require public colleges and the high school sports governing body in Wisconsin to accept the chiropractor-conducted physicals as legitimate.

And, the same proposal would allow chiropractors to conduct physicals for commercial drivers.
